Résumé

In his Geometry, Descartes relentlessly exploits his algebraic representation to enhance the uniformity, and hence generality, with which he treats geometrical problems. This is a key element in the intellectual power of his approach. We also consider Descartes' own discussion of his representational strategy, in REGULA 16.
